NFL: A Monday night melee

Two of the most dominant teams from opening week highlight the NFL Week 2 odds.

Click here for the early lines and make Sportsbook.com your NFL football headquarters. We have the best selection of future odds, and the best promotions available like our Rush for the Riches and Primetime Props.

The Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles are two of the best teams in the NFC, and they combine with the New York Giants to form the best division in football, the NFC East. That’s why fans are salivating already at their Monday Night Football melee.

Dallas is coming off a 28-10 win at Cleveland. It was a devastating performance by quarterback Tony Romo as he torched the inexperienced Browns secondary to the tune of 320 passing yards. Dallas’ bigger accomplishment was holding Cleveland’s potent passing attack to just 114 yards.

Philadelphia silenced any critics they may have had with a 38-3 thrashing of the St. Louis Rams. Donovan McNabb was equally as sharp as Romo with 361 passing yards and three touchdowns. However, the Rams are one of the worst teams in football, and the Eagles need to prove they can play well on the road, thus their seven-point dog status.

A great early division battle in the AFC features San Diego getting two-points at Denver. The Chargers are supposed to be the class of the AFC West, and they are still the heavy 2:5 favorites in that category at Sportsbook.com (Denver is 3:2).

The problem is that San Diego lost at home to Carolina last week, a place they were 15-1 in the last two regular seasons. Meanwhile, Denver quarterback, Jay Cutler was doing his best Dan Marino impression is an impressive 41-14 win at Oakland. And that was without his favorite receiver, Brandon Marshall who returns this week from a one-game suspension.

Two more interesting AFC battles are Buffalo (+6) at Jacksonville and Pittsburgh (-6) at Cleveland. The latter game is the Sunday night affair with the pressure purely on Cleveland coach Romeo Crennel to rebound from last week’s debacle.

Buffalo again showed last week why they are so dangerous at home, beating Seattle, 34-10. The road has been their nemesis though (3-5 straight-up and ATS last year), and that’s why they are getting almost a touchdown from a Jacksonville team that is decimated on the offensive line due to injuries.

The best out-of-conference game this week is Indianapolis two-point chalk at Minnesota. That’s not a lot of points to give if you’re a Peyton Manning fan. However, Manning and the Colts offense sputtered last week against Chicago, scoring just 13 points at home while surrendering 29.

The Vikings lost 24-19 at their biggest rival last week, the Green Bay Packers, and neither team can afford to start the season 0-2.

Of course, we can’t talk about this week’s games without mentioning the New England Patriots. The ‘Brady-less Bunch’ are two-point dogs at their biggest rivals, the New York Jets. The oddsmakers clearly believe the Pats will rally around backup Matt Cassel this week and give the Jets a game.

Other Week 2 spreads at Sportsbook.com have Oakland (+4) at Kansas City, Tennessee (+1) at Cincinnati, New Orleans (Even) at Washington, Green Bay (-3) at Detroit, Chicago (+3) at Carolina, NY Giants (-9) at St. Louis, Atlanta (+8) at Tampa Bay, San Francisco (+8) at Seattle, Miami (+7) at Arizona and Baltimore (+4.5) at Houston.

Sportsbook.com has annuonuced its very own cashback system, where players can receive up to 5% back form any sports losses.

NCAAF Saturday – Miami (FL) Hurricanes vs. Florida Gators

The Florida Gators were sensational in their first game of the season. By whipping the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 56 to 10, the Gators signaled to college football betting fans that they are definitely a team to key football bets around this season.

The Gators offense was spectacular as usual, racking up four touchdowns in both the second and third quarters, but it was their defense that looked absolutely awesome. The Gators held the Rainbows to 10 points and all 10 points were scored in the fourth quarter when the Gators had the game well in hand.

Florida will look to continue their dominance this weekend when they face the in state rival Miami Hurricanes. The Hurricanes look to be much improved from last year with athleticism on both sides of the ball. Football betting fans wonder whether or not the Hurricanes have improved enough to handle a team like Florida.

Here are the BetUS online sportsbook NCAAF odds for this game.

Kick-off: 9/6/2008 8:00 pm est.

Miami Florida Hurricanes + 21 ½ – 110

Florida Gators - 21 ½ – 110

It’s too early to talk trends in this game. So, we’re going to have to just consider the notion that both teams will play to the best of their ability. With that being written, are the Florida Gators really more than three touchdowns better than the Miami Hurricanes?

They could very well be. This Florida Gator team is loaded in every position. So much so that they racked up 56 points against Hawaii without Percy Harvin, their best wide receiver, linebacker Brandon Spikes and guard Jim Tartt. With those three returning to the line-up, what chance do the Hurricanes actually have of beating the Florida Gators in this game?

Oh, yeah, the Hurricanes don’t have to actually beat the Gators. They just have to lose by no more than 21 points. The Hurricanes have improved enough for me to believe that beating the BetUS online sportsbook spread of 21 ½ is absolutely doable. They are adept at playing a much faster game with quarterback James Harris running the spread offense with abandon. He racked up over 70 yards rushing and 190 yards passing. Tim Tebow, Harris is not, but he won’t have to be for NCAAF betting fans to win this wager.

I’ll be making an online bet on the Miami Hurricanes to beat the BetUS online football betting spread of 21 ½ points in this Saturday game.

One thing to note is that Hurricane Hannah, yes, it’s a real storm and not a crazy woman who keep bothering Florida recruits, is on its way to the state of Florida. We’ll have to wait and see how it impacts the start of this game.

NCAAF Saturday – Stanford Cardinal vs. Arizona State Sun Devils

The Stanford Cardinal, yes, that glorified team in the Pac-10 named after a color and with a fir tree as a mascot, started their season with aplomb against the much more ballyhooed Oregon State Beavers by beating the Beavers 36 to 28 this past Saturday.

It was a huge victory for Stanford. The Cardinal practically shut-down online sportsbooks last year when they took out the USC Trojans on the road.

Luckily, because they started out this season much better than they did last season, I suspect that there won’t be any 43 ½ point online betting spreads when the Cardinal play the Trojans this year.

Of course, that’s way, way in the future. This weekend the Cardinal will try to capitalize on their momentum when they take on what many football betting fans consider the second best team in the Pac-10, the Arizona State Sun Devils.

The Sun Devils looked okay beating Northern Arizona 30 to 13 in their first game of the season. I say okay because the high flying Sun Devils should have scored at least 42 points in this game. No worries.

It’s not like the Stanford Cardinal should pose much of a threat to the Sun Devils, right? I mean, a victory against Oregon State is one thing. Beating ASU in Tempe where the temperature should be between 95 to 100 degrees is another.

Here are the BetUS online sportsbook NCAAF odds for this game.

Kick-off: 9/6/2008 10:00 pm est.

The key in determining the winner against the spread in this game is determining which Kool-Aid to drink. If NCAAF betting fans like the look of the Kool-Aid being offered by the Stanford Cardinal, that says the Cardinal have improved to the point of challenging teams like the Sun Devils, then by all means make an online wager on the Cardinal.

But if the Sun Devil Kool-Aid looks tempting, the drink that says the Sun Devils are the second best team in the Pac-10 after USC, then you have to take the Sun Devils at – 14 in this game, right?

The truth is that the Stanford Cardinal looked good in their last game versus the Oregon State Beavers, but not good enough for me to even consider taking them in Arizona State’s first home game of the NCAAF season. The Sun Devils are far superior to the Stanford Cardinal. They should beat the Cardinal by at least 20 points. This has the makings of a serious blow-out with Arizona State’s offense just as good as last season’s and their defense being better this season than last year’s.

I’ll be making an online wager on the Arizona State Sun Devils to cover the – 14 points in their game versus the Stanford Cardinal this Saturday.

Alabama vs. Clemson – Does Nick Have New Tricks

BetUS Sportsbook bettors who wager on college football will get to see one of the most potent offensive teams in the country on Saturday, August 30, when the Clemson Tigers (9-4 SU, 6-6 ATS in 2007) take on the Alabama Crimson Tide (7-6 SU, 3-8-1 ATS in 2007) in an inter-conference game that will be played at a neutral location – the Georgia Dome in Atlanta – and slated for kickoff at 8 PM ET.

BetUS NCAA Football Betting Odds: CLEMSON -5

Here are some of the NCAA college football betting trends as they relate to this matchup:

* ALA is 2-8-1 ATS in its last 11 games

* ALA has lost four of its last five games SU

* ALA has covered two of its last seven games

* CLEM has won five of its last seven games SU

* CLEM has played four of its last six games UNDER the total

We understand how competitive the SEC is, but the University of Alabama did not entice Nick Saban to flee Miami in the middle of the night in order to go through 7-6 seasons, which is exactly what the Crimson Tide was reduced to in 2007, Now, with nine starters returning on the offensive side of the ball, plus prize freshman receiver Julio Jones, Saban has no excuses. John Parker Wilson is a quarterback who is highly regarded by some, having completed 55% of his passes as a junior. He will be well-protected by the outstanding left tackle, Andre Smith. And Terry Grant heads up a group of running backs who should more than hold their own. But Wilson needs to be a quick study, as he is playing for his third offensive coordinator (Jim McElwain) in three years. So far he’s looked good, throwing for 309 yards in the first scrimmage.

The problem here is that Alabama’s defense does not have many playmakers on it, and that leaves it vulnerable to an offense for which there are very few question marks. It is quite possible that Clemson brings more to the table in terms of its skill personnel than any team in the country. The trigger man, Cullen Harper, might be the first senior QB taken in the NFL draft. Last season he threw for 27 TD’s with only six interceptions, and is said to have a big upside. His favorite target is Aaron Kelly, who was on the receiving end of 88 passes last year for 1081 yards. Kelly will be an All-America and Biletnikoff Award candidate. he is joined by Tyler Grisham, who caught 60 passes in 2007, and Jacoby Ford, who averaged 18 yards a catch.

Then there is the backfield, which is the best in all of college football. In the last two years, James Davis and C.J. Spiller have combined for almost 4000 rushing yards. They are the “Thunder and Lightning” of the ACC, and give this team the kind of balance it needs to possibly contend for a national title, especially if the offensive line develops.

Clemson also brought back eight starters on a defense that ranked ninth overall in yards allowed. This includes the entire secondary, which rates among the best in the country. And that’s really the story in this game – it’s like a fight between two heavy punchers. Both can pitch, but one is the better catcher. In this case, it is Clemson, hands down.

We’ll lay the points with the Tigers, the five-point favorite in the BetUS NCAA college football betting odds.

Western Michigan at Nebraska on Saturday August 30

It looks like it’s going to be a whole new ballgame in Lincoln this fall, and BetUS Sportsbook bettors who follow college football will no doubt be curious about the new-look Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-7 SU, 3-9 ATS in 2007) as they play host to the Broncos of Western Michigan (5-7 SU, 1-8-2 ATS in 2007) in the college football opener for both teams, scheduled for Saturday, August 30 at 7 PM ET at Memorial Stadium (artificial turf).

BetUS NCAA Football Betting Odds: NEBRASKA -14

Here are some of the NCAA college football betting trends as they relate to this matchup:

* WMU is 0-4-1 ATS in its last five games
* WMU has played four of its last six games UNDER the total
* WMU is 1-4-1 ATS in its last six road games
* WMU has played five of its last seven road games OVER the total

* NEB has covered two of its last 11 games
* NEB has lost six of its last seven games SU
* NEB has covered one of its last six home games
* NEB has won 11 of its last 15 home games SU
* NEB has played six of its last nine home games OVER the total

Last season didn’t start out so badly for Nebraska, which whipped Nevada 52-10 in the season opener and followed with a win over another bowl-bound team in Wake Forest. But they went downhill shortly thereafter. The Huskers, under Bill Callahan, had perked up their offense with the West Coast system, abandoning the Power-I and option plays that had brought national championships to the program, but somewhere along the way they lost their defense. Nebraska gave up 40 or more points six times, and in its most embarrassing moments surrendered 76 to Kansas and 65 at Colorado. Obviously Callahan’s fate was sealed when Tom Osborne was brought in as the interim athletic director.

After firing Callahan, Osborne hired Bo Pelini, who spent the last three years as defensive coordinator at LSU. The mission is clear – put this stop unit back on track. Nebraska will be inexperienced in its secondary but brings back the entire defensive front, and that is encouraging news. Now it’s up to Pelini and his staff to “coach up” this unit.

On offense, Nebraska ought to be alright. I really like the moxie of senior quarterback Joe Ganz, who stepped in when Sam Kellar went down and threw for 15 touchdowns in five starts, engineering a 73-31 blowout of Kansas State along the way. Ganz is free-wheeling and takes chances; he may be reigned in a bit by Pelini but may also cut down on mistakes. He’s got a legitimate all-conference running back in Marlon Lucky (1019 yards last year), enough receivers to work with and an offensive line that returns four starters.

Western Michigan brings back a significant amount of defensive talent from a team that ranked 68th overall in the country, playing mostly Mid-American Conference opposition. And the schedule appears to be agreeable enough that the Broncos could find themselves playing in a minor bowl game, even if they don’t win the MAC. On offense QB Tim Hiller returns for his junior season. He threw for over 3000 yards last season but a lot of his stuff was of the “dink and dunk” variety. His 15 interceptions were also a concern. WMU’s ground attack averaged just 3.4 yards a carry last year, so if that figure doesn’t jump significantly, this offense could be slowed down quite a bit by what might be a rejuvenated Nebraska defense under Pelini.

One would expect the attitude to be changing in Lincoln in light of last season. Nebraska will always have a certain amount of “horses,” and don’t be surprised if the program comes out here looking to make a strong statement. That turns out to be bad news for Western Michigan, which faced out-of-conference foes in its first three out of the box last year and gave up 151 points. Ganz and Lucky are fully capable of moving the ball down the field. We’ll lay the points with Nebraska, the 14-point favorite in the BetUS NCAA college football betting odds.
