NFL: A Monday night melee

Two of the most dominant teams from opening week highlight the NFL Week 2 odds.

Click here for the early lines and make Sportsbook.com your NFL football headquarters. We have the best selection of future odds, and the best promotions available like our Rush for the Riches and Primetime Props.

The Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles are two of the best teams in the NFC, and they combine with the New York Giants to form the best division in football, the NFC East. That’s why fans are salivating already at their Monday Night Football melee.

Dallas is coming off a 28-10 win at Cleveland. It was a devastating performance by quarterback Tony Romo as he torched the inexperienced Browns secondary to the tune of 320 passing yards. Dallas’ bigger accomplishment was holding Cleveland’s potent passing attack to just 114 yards.

Philadelphia silenced any critics they may have had with a 38-3 thrashing of the St. Louis Rams. Donovan McNabb was equally as sharp as Romo with 361 passing yards and three touchdowns. However, the Rams are one of the worst teams in football, and the Eagles need to prove they can play well on the road, thus their seven-point dog status.

A great early division battle in the AFC features San Diego getting two-points at Denver. The Chargers are supposed to be the class of the AFC West, and they are still the heavy 2:5 favorites in that category at Sportsbook.com (Denver is 3:2).

The problem is that San Diego lost at home to Carolina last week, a place they were 15-1 in the last two regular seasons. Meanwhile, Denver quarterback, Jay Cutler was doing his best Dan Marino impression is an impressive 41-14 win at Oakland. And that was without his favorite receiver, Brandon Marshall who returns this week from a one-game suspension.

Two more interesting AFC battles are Buffalo (+6) at Jacksonville and Pittsburgh (-6) at Cleveland. The latter game is the Sunday night affair with the pressure purely on Cleveland coach Romeo Crennel to rebound from last week’s debacle.

Buffalo again showed last week why they are so dangerous at home, beating Seattle, 34-10. The road has been their nemesis though (3-5 straight-up and ATS last year), and that’s why they are getting almost a touchdown from a Jacksonville team that is decimated on the offensive line due to injuries.

The best out-of-conference game this week is Indianapolis two-point chalk at Minnesota. That’s not a lot of points to give if you’re a Peyton Manning fan. However, Manning and the Colts offense sputtered last week against Chicago, scoring just 13 points at home while surrendering 29.

The Vikings lost 24-19 at their biggest rival last week, the Green Bay Packers, and neither team can afford to start the season 0-2.

Of course, we can’t talk about this week’s games without mentioning the New England Patriots. The ‘Brady-less Bunch’ are two-point dogs at their biggest rivals, the New York Jets. The oddsmakers clearly believe the Pats will rally around backup Matt Cassel this week and give the Jets a game.

Other Week 2 spreads at Sportsbook.com have Oakland (+4) at Kansas City, Tennessee (+1) at Cincinnati, New Orleans (Even) at Washington, Green Bay (-3) at Detroit, Chicago (+3) at Carolina, NY Giants (-9) at St. Louis, Atlanta (+8) at Tampa Bay, San Francisco (+8) at Seattle, Miami (+7) at Arizona and Baltimore (+4.5) at Houston.

Sportsbook.com has annuonuced its very own cashback system, where players can receive up to 5% back form any sports losses. This will be a great promotion for all players interested in the NFL!

NCAAF Saturday – Miami (FL) Hurricanes vs. Florida Gators

The Florida Gators were sensational in their first game of the season. By whipping the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 56 to 10, the Gators signaled to college football betting fans that they are definitely a team to key football bets around this season.

The Gators offense was spectacular as usual, racking up four touchdowns in both the second and third quarters, but it was their defense that looked absolutely awesome. The Gators held the Rainbows to 10 points and all 10 points were scored in the fourth quarter when the Gators had the game well in hand.

Florida will look to continue their dominance this weekend when they face the in state rival Miami Hurricanes. The Hurricanes look to be much improved from last year with athleticism on both sides of the ball. Football betting fans wonder whether or not the Hurricanes have improved enough to handle a team like Florida.

Here are the BetUS online sportsbook NCAAF odds for this game.

Kick-off: 9/6/2008 8:00 pm est.

Miami Florida Hurricanes + 21 ½ – 110

Florida Gators - 21 ½ – 110

It’s too early to talk trends in this game. So, we’re going to have to just consider the notion that both teams will play to the best of their ability. With that being written, are the Florida Gators really more than three touchdowns better than the Miami Hurricanes?

They could very well be. This Florida Gator team is loaded in every position. So much so that they racked up 56 points against Hawaii without Percy Harvin, their best wide receiver, linebacker Brandon Spikes and guard Jim Tartt. With those three returning to the line-up, what chance do the Hurricanes actually have of beating the Florida Gators in this game?

Oh, yeah, the Hurricanes don’t have to actually beat the Gators. They just have to lose by no more than 21 points. The Hurricanes have improved enough for me to believe that beating the BetUS online sportsbook spread of 21 ½ is absolutely doable. They are adept at playing a much faster game with quarterback James Harris running the spread offense with abandon. He racked up over 70 yards rushing and 190 yards passing. Tim Tebow, Harris is not, but he won’t have to be for NCAAF betting fans to win this wager.

I’ll be making an online bet on the Miami Hurricanes to beat the BetUS online football betting spread of 21 ½ points in this Saturday game.

One thing to note is that Hurricane Hannah, yes, it’s a real storm and not a crazy woman who keep bothering Florida recruits, is on its way to the state of Florida. We’ll have to wait and see how it impacts the start of this game.

Our Best sportsbooks rankings show that our Sports Book Review are proud to promote the online SportBook Betus.
Get Free & Paid Picks for the NCAA Matchup Between Tennessee & UCLA Here at Cybersportsblog.com >>

An uncertain quarterback situation has made the UCLA Bruins 7.5-point home dogs to the Tennessee Volunteers on college football’s version of Monday Night Football.

This game is being broadcast at 8 pm on ESPN and a whopping 88% of the early bettors favor the Vols. Remember to make Sportsbook.com your home for college football this season. You’ll find the greatest array of game and future odds, all released the earliest in the industry.

UCLA’s starting quarterback for Monday night is junior college transfer Kevin Craft, and if you haven’t heard of him, don’t be ashamed. Craft was the team’s third option and is only starting because Patrick Cowan suffered a season-ending knee injury and Ben Olson is still out with a foot problem.

That’s not how Coach Rick Neuheisel drew it up on the blackboard when he was hired in December. Neuheisel played quarterback at UCLA and is a former head coach at Colorado and Washington. He also hired an elite offensive coordinator in Norm Chow, who held the same position for USC and the NFL’s Tennessee Titans.

Craft is trying to make the jump after playing last season for Mt. San Antonio College, and he has struggled more than his share in practice. It doesn’t help matters that the offensive line is suspect and playmakers at the skill positions are mostly unproven. The defense is ahead of the offense at this point, but they have their hands full with Tennessee.

The Vols, out of the SEC, are ranked 18th in the country after going 10-4 last year and 6-2 in the conference. This is the second year in a row they have opened up against a Pac-10 school after suffering a 45-31 defeat at Cal last season as seven-point underdogs.

You can be sure that Coach Phillip Fulmer is hammering away at his team all week about that game to motivate them against UCLA.

The big change to Tennessee this year comes on offense with a new offensive coordinator in Dave Clawson and redshirt junior quarterback Jonathan Crompton taking over for Erik Ainge. Crompton did have two starts against LSU and Arkansas in 2006 and he’s expected to excel in Clawson’s more high powered offense.

Crompton is also aided by the fact the Vols have two talented running backs in Arian Foster and Montario Hardesty. That means they’ll be plenty of play-action passes to a deep receiving corps. The Vols did lose linebacker Jerod Mayo and they have questions on run defense, but the UCLA offensive line doesn’t look good enough to capitalize.

One down note for Tennessee is that starting defensive back Brett Vinson and defensive tackle Donald Langley were suspended for this game due to academic issues.
One betting trend for this game is that UCLA is 20-7 ATS in their last 27 home games, including 5-1 last year. Will that number hold up against a very talented Tennessee team?

NCAA Football Week One Wagering Pick – Coastal Carolina at Penn State

The Penn State Nittany Lions, (9-4 SU, 4-4 Conf., 6-7 ATS, 6-7 O/U) posted a solid straight up and conference record in 2007, but clearly are not a National Championship caliber contender these days as venerable longtime head coach Joe Paterno stubbornly holds onto the title of head coach despite his status as one of the nation’s most well-known octogenarians.

The Nittany Lions will be a team undergoing several significant changes in 2008 as the team will start a new quarterback following the graduation of 2007 starter Anthony Morelli.

Junior, Daryll Clark and red-shirt freshman Pat Devlin figure on sharing time under center until one or the other claims the starting job. The Lions will also have a new starting tailback in sophomore Evan Royster, though redshirt freshman Stephfon Green will also get his share of carries.

The team’s young signal callers also have a slew of talented wide receivers and the offensive line returns all five starters returning from a unit that should be one of the best in the Big Ten in 2008.

Penn State should also have one of the best defensive lines in the nation, led by junior defensive end Maurice Evans, (12.5 sacks in 2007).

With senior linebacker Sean Lee suffering a knee injury this spring and Dan Connor moving on to the NFL, there are questions at linebacker, though the Lions do have the makings of a solid secondary.

Having lived just down the street from Coastal Carolina University for several years in Myrtle Beach, S.C., I can say from first-hand knowledge that the Chanticleers would likely struggle against one of the nation’s best high school teams with their unimpressive talent level.

The Chanticleers, went an uninspiring 5-6 overall last season, but managed to go an impressive 3-1 Big South Conference games. Coastal Carolina averaged a fine 28.7 points per game offensively, but allowed nearly as much, giving up 26.1 points per game.

The Chanticleers relied on their rushing attack to average a whopping 204.1 yards per contest, but again, allowed more yards per game on the ground than they gained, giving up a whopping 218.9 rushing yards per game.

Coastal Carolina averaged just 156.3 passing yards per game last season and limited their opponents to jut 141.4 per game.

Analysis: I’ll keep this pick short and sweet for the BetUS online NCAA college football wagering community by saying that the Chanticleers are going down hard and fast against the totally superior Nittany Lions who have the perfect Week One matchup in which to get their young quarterbacks a big boost of confidence. I usually hate high point spreads like this one, but am supremely confident that the Nittany Lions will rock and roll all over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.

NCAAF Free Pick: Penn State -37 Points

Coastal Carolina @ Penn State
Coastal Carolina +37 Points -115
Penn State -37 Points -115

NCAA Football Week One Wagering Pick – Western Illinois at Arkansas

The Arkansas Razorbacks, (8-5 SU, 7-5 ATS, 8-4 O/U) have a new leading man in former Louisville and Atlanta Falcons head coach Bobby Petrino and have some pieces in place to succeed in 2008 despite losing the best running back in all of college football in Darren McFadden.

After NAA football betting fans saw them go 8-5 overall and 4-4 in SEC play last season, Petrino will bring his pass-oriented offense back to the college game after flaming out miserably in his one quitting-interrupted season with the Falcons in which he was called every four-letter name in the book by Falcons players, management and owner Arthur Blank.

The Razorbacks will have a new starting tailback in speedy Michael Smith who could turn out to be a star someday. However, the team has issues at quarterback with incumbent starter Casey Dick not setting the college football world on its ear with his mediocre passing skills.

Having solid lines on both sides of the ball should help as the team adjusts to Petrino’s pass-happy system. Center Jonathan Luigs anchors an offensive line that allowed only one sack per game last season.

The Western Illinois Leathernecks, (6-5 SU, 3-3 Conf.) went 6-5 overall last season, including a respectable 3-3 mark in Missouri Valley Conference matchups. Led by the team’s impressive offense, the Leathernecks averaged 24.8 points per game while allowing just 19.5 points per game defensively.

Western Illinois ran for a whopping 255.6 yards per game but threw for just 123.5 yards per contest. The Leathernecks allowed just 144.5 yards per game on the ground and another 175.5 per game through the air.

All-America running back Herb Donaldson is back for his senior season and is on pace to become Western Illinois’ all-time leading rusher in his third season as a starter. The Walter Payton Award finalist will anchor an offense that returns 19 letterwinners and nine starters from the nation’s 11th-best rushing team.

Sophomore quarterback Matt Barr matched the school record for wins as a freshman (five) and became the most successful rushing quarterback in school history, gaining 385 yards on the ground and four touchdowns on 91 attempts.

Entering his 10th season at Western Illinois University, head football coach Don Patterson will be taking an immediate leave of absence due to a recent diagnosis of tonsillar cancer.

Western Illinois did lose both starting offensive guards from a year ago but returns 22 defensive lettermen, including nine starters and six all-conference honorees from a group that ranked among the nation’s top-25 in six categories last year.

Analysis: While I am certainly no fan of Petrino’s and generally think the guy gave the Falcons a really under-handed one-year tenure, I think this is a game the Razorbacks win easily as they likely run up the score on the Leathernecks as Petrino tries to make a statement in his very first game at Arkansas.

Petrinto should remember however, that, what goes around, usually comes around, even if it is a different team delivering the message the second time around. Take the Razorback to win and win going away, though I’ll admit that I can’t wait to see the Razorbacks get routed by some conference opponent at some point in this 2008 college football betting season.

NFL: Brady to repeat monster season?

Oddsmakers expect the Tom Brady and Randy Moss combination to continue to tear apart opposing defenses.

The New England Patriots quarterback is the current favorite to lead the league in passing yards this season at 5:2 odds, followed by a host of others at 5:1 odds.

Betting on the quarterback to have the Most Passing Yards is just one of the many NFL Futures bets you can wager on here at Sportsbook.com. Check out all the odds and options at our Live Odds page.
Here’s a look at the top quarterbacks:

Tom Brady (5:2)

Brady threw for 4,806 yards last season as the Patriots re-wrote the NFL record books with a pass-happy offense that threw the ball downfield to a number of receivers, including Moss.

However, defenses limited the Patriots’ production in the postseason, holding Brady to just 245 yards per game. Brady’s mobility in the pocket seemed limited in those games and the Pro Bowler was seen in a foot cast leading up to the Super Bowl.

Brady has yet to play in the preseason, missing Sunday’s game with a sore foot. If the foot injury nags Brady throughout the season, he could have a tough time leading the league again.

Peyton Manning (5:1)

For all the praise, accolades and awards Manning receives, he’s only twice been the quarterback to throw for the most yards in a season.
Manning led the league in passing with 4,412 yards in 2000 and 4,267 in 2003. He is always among the top quarterbacks but with the league filled with offenses opting for air attacks, Manning is no longer the only quarterback expected to put up big numbers.

Last year, six quarterbacks finished ahead of Manning’s 4,040 passing yards and the eight-time Pro Bowler has yet to step on the field this season after having surgery on his left knee.

Drew Brees (5:1)

The 2006 passing yardage champ, Brees put up almost identical numbers last year to finish second on the list of passers.

After throwing for 4,418 yards in 2006, Brees threw for 4,423 yards last year despite only passing for an average of 225 yards over the first three games. The New Orleans Saints offense got off to a horrible start but Brees put up monster numbers down the stretch.

If the offense is on track from Week 1, Brees could easily recapture the title for the Most Passing Yards.

Tony Romo (5:1)

Take away the playoffs and Tony Romo has been the quarterback that Dallas Cowboys’ fans have been waiting for.

The 28-year-old threw for 4,211 yards last year, third most of any NFL quarterback and should be able to post similar numbers this year. Romo has plenty of options in receivers Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton, along with one of the best tight ends in the game, Jason Witten.

With Marion Barber and Felix Jones at running back, defenses won’t be able to focus exclusively on the passing game and that should open up more plays for Romo.

Carson Palmer (5:1)

The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback is thought of as one of the game’s best quarterbacks but has yet to finish in the Top 3 in passing yards in a season.

Palmer has two exciting receivers in Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh but wasn’t always on the same page as the flamboyant Johnson last year. Johnson has made headlines for numerous reasons, from alleged infighting with Palmer and teammates to demanding a trade in the offseason.

If Palmer is going to pass for more than the 4,131 yards he had last year, he’ll need to keep Johnson happy and on the field. Johnson was injured in this past weekend’s preseason game but vows to be ready for the season opener.

Jon Kitna (8:1)

Kitna threw for more than 4,000 yards in two-straight seasons under Mike Martz in Detroit but Martz has taken his high-octane offensive philosophy to San Francisco for the 2008 season.

It remains to be seen how the passing game will fair without Martz calling the shots but with Roy Williams, Calvin Johnson and Shaun McDonald, Kitna has three great targets.

Without a rushing attack, Detroit has been forced to throw the ball in recent seasons but they added rookie Kevin Smith in the draft. If he can produce, the Lions may not be as dependant on Kitna and his receivers to move the chains.

Derek Anderson (25:1)

If you’re interested in a longshot, Anderson could be the best bet. At 25:1 odds, the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback offers a big payout and with an improving offense, he should do better than last year’s 3,787 passing yards.

Anderson finished ninth in passing last year despite only starting 15 games and is entering his fifth season in the league.

With rising receiver Braylon Edwards continuing his ascent up the ladder of the NFL’s top receivers, a healthy Kellen Winslow at tight end and newcomer Donte’ Stallworth coming over from the Patriots, the Browns offense should pick up where it left off last year.

Cleveland leads the league with an average of 275 passing yards per game in the preseason.
