NFL Football Futures – Jags vs. Cards Head-to-Head

At BetUS Sportsbook, you can wager on win totals of one NFL team compared with another. Take a look under the section “Football-Futures” and go to “Regular Season Win Matchups.” And don’t wait too long, because time is running out!

Today, we’ll take a look at one team that found itself in the post-season last year, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and another that hasn’t quite developed winning culture yet – the Arizona Cardinals.

First, let’s present the BetUS odds on who will have more wins at the regular season’s end:

BetUS NFL Football Futures Odds
Most Regular Season Wins

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS -2 wins (-105)
ARIZONA CARDINALS +2 wins (-135)

It’s been Ken Whisenhunt’s goal to toughen up the Arizona Cardinals. Toward that end, he would like to make his running attack a dominant force. Clearly he has a running back in Edgerrin James who can make that happen. Maybe. The offensive line has to hold up its end, and that hasn’t always been the case.

Jack Del Rio’s Jaguars have had no such problem. Jacksonville is one of the most efficient running teams in the NFL, and in fact ranked second in the league in overall rushing yards last year. Very few teams have a “thunder and lightning” combo like the Jags have with Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew.

One of the differences between the Arizona and Jacksonville offenses is that the Cards have two of the most threatening wide receivers in the game in Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzpatrick, while J-Ville does not have anyone who causes defensive coordinators to stay up at night.

So why isn’t Arizona the favorite here?

Because for one thing, they don’t stop the pass all that well. The Cardinals were 28th in the league in passing yards allowed in 2007, and they need to do a much better job rushing the passer. Jacksonville, which has customarily been one of the NFL’s best at pressuring the quarterback, is hoping to get back to that level; they have been going through some anxiety with the holdout by first-round draft pick Derrick Harvey, who just recently signed his contract.

Any kind of optimism in Arizona was probably tied to optimism over the development of quarterback Matt Leinart, the former Heisman Trophy winner. But Leinart simply did not perform well in the pre-season, and was beaten out by Kurt Warner, who is a wily veteran but can not throw the ball with nearly the degree of effectiveness he did in his years in St. Louis. As such, the Cardinals are limited.

Arizona – plays in the easier division, for sure, and could conceivably come away with four wins in the NFC West. Out of the division there are winnable games against Miami, the Jets, Buffalo, and maybe Minnesota. Beyond that, one can’t tell. That’s possibly another 8-8 season. Or it could be worse, depending on how badly the quarterback situation works out. The upside is not big here.

Jacksonville – can they be counted on for ten wins? Well, every division game will be difficult, and if this team comes out of it with a 3-3 record, it won’t be the worse thing in the world. Since the team, especially the defense, is so formidable at home, the home games against Buffalo, Cleveland, Minnesota and Green Bay all over an opportunity for victory. They can also win at Cincinnati, Baltimore, Detroit and Chicago. Heck, they have the ability to win 12 games. The non-division schedule is agreeable enough.

Not an overwhelming recommendation here, but I have more faith in the playoff-level team than the one that is struggling just to get over .500. Let’s go with the Jaguars laying two wins in this special BetUS football prop.

JAY’S PLAY: JACKSONVILLE -2 wins (-105)

At BetUS Sportsbook, those who like to wager on pro football can take a swing at propositions that compare the regular season win totals of every team in the NFL, not just independently, but against each other. It’s all under “Football-Futures.”

Today we’re going to take a look at one of these head-to-head matchups, between two teams whop are within a few dozen miles of each other – the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Redskins.

First, let’s present the BetUS NFL odds on who will have more wins at the regular season’s end:

BetUS NFL Football Futures Odds

Most Regular Season Wins
RAVENS +1.5 wins (-190)
REDSKINS -1.5 wins (+150)

It makes sense to first out this “matchup” in perspective. The Redskins and Ravens are both playing with first-year head coaches who have something of a background in offense. Baltimore is going with John Harbaugh, who last coached at Stanford, and the ‘Skins take something of a leap with Jim Zorn, who was last employed as an NFL quarterback coach, and who played the position for many years with the Seattle Seahawks.

The Redskins, who went through some trying emotional times after the tragic loss of Pro Bowl safety Sean Taylor, rallied late in the season to garner a wild card spot, while the Ravens, who had high hopes at the start of the season with Steve McNair at quarterback, suffered through an injury and turnover-plagued season where its offense never got started, and which led to the departure of both McNair and coach Brian Billick.

Baltimore used both Kyle Boller and Troy Smith at quarterback, and had enough lack of confidence in the state of that position that Joe Flacco, a quarterback at Division 1-AA Delaware, was drafted in the first round. Boller and Smith will get the bulk of playing time at QB until Flacco is ready. None of this is particularly savory. And though it is difficult to use the pre-season schedule as a barometer, there is no evidence that the Ravens have picked up anything in the way of offensive imagination.

There is the distinct possibility the Ravens will be swept by their three rivals in the AFC’s North division. And then they have to play all four teams from the most competitive division in the league – the AFC South, where they figure to come up short against Indianapolis, Tennessee and Jacksonville at the very least, and possibly Houston, which outdistanced Baltimore with an 8-8 record last year and host the September 14 game at Reliant Stadium with Boller possibly still nursing a shoulder injury.

Will the Ravens fare better against the defending Super Bowl champion Giants at the Meadowlands, or at Texas Stadium against the Cowboys? I think not. The last four games of the season take place against teams who made last year’s playoffs, when Flacco might be given the keys to the car in order to do some on-the-job training. One of those contests is a home game against these Redskins.

Can that be the “swing” game in this proposition?

I don’t think so. For some reason, Washington seems to have drawn a less problematic out-of-division schedule than the Ravens have. New Orleans, Arizona and St. Louis at home are very winnable games. So are games at Detroit, San Francisco and Cincinnati. Even if they go just 2-4 within the division, the Redskins can finish 8-8. And there is potential upside. I don’t see Baltimore approaching those heights, especially if they resign themselves to breaking in the rookie “quarterback of the future” at some point.

Yes, Baltimore is tough against the run (allowing 2.8 yards a carry last year). But Zorn starts with more talent than Harbaugh. And unless the ‘Skins have a total collapse, they should cover this one with room to spare. We’ll “lay” a win and a half and take the +150 price with the Redskins in this special BetUS football prop.

JAY’S PLAY: WASHINGTON REDSKINS -1.5 wins (+150)
