NCAAF Saturday – Miami (FL) Hurricanes vs. Florida Gators

The Florida Gators were sensational in their first game of the season. By whipping the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 56 to 10, the Gators signaled to college football betting fans that they are definitely a team to key football bets around this season.

The Gators offense was spectacular as usual, racking up four touchdowns in both the second and third quarters, but it was their defense that looked absolutely awesome. The Gators held the Rainbows to 10 points and all 10 points were scored in the fourth quarter when the Gators had the game well in hand.

Florida will look to continue their dominance this weekend when they face the in state rival Miami Hurricanes. The Hurricanes look to be much improved from last year with athleticism on both sides of the ball. Football betting fans wonder whether or not the Hurricanes have improved enough to handle a team like Florida.

Here are the BetUS online sportsbook NCAAF odds for this game.

Kick-off: 9/6/2008 8:00 pm est.

Miami Florida Hurricanes + 21 ½ – 110

Florida Gators - 21 ½ – 110

It’s too early to talk trends in this game. So, we’re going to have to just consider the notion that both teams will play to the best of their ability. With that being written, are the Florida Gators really more than three touchdowns better than the Miami Hurricanes?

They could very well be. This Florida Gator team is loaded in every position. So much so that they racked up 56 points against Hawaii without Percy Harvin, their best wide receiver, linebacker Brandon Spikes and guard Jim Tartt. With those three returning to the line-up, what chance do the Hurricanes actually have of beating the Florida Gators in this game?

Oh, yeah, the Hurricanes don’t have to actually beat the Gators. They just have to lose by no more than 21 points. The Hurricanes have improved enough for me to believe that beating the BetUS online sportsbook spread of 21 ½ is absolutely doable. They are adept at playing a much faster game with quarterback James Harris running the spread offense with abandon. He racked up over 70 yards rushing and 190 yards passing. Tim Tebow, Harris is not, but he won’t have to be for NCAAF betting fans to win this wager.

I’ll be making an online bet on the Miami Hurricanes to beat the BetUS online football betting spread of 21 ½ points in this Saturday game.

One thing to note is that Hurricane Hannah, yes, it’s a real storm and not a crazy woman who keep bothering Florida recruits, is on its way to the state of Florida. We’ll have to wait and see how it impacts the start of this game.

NCAA Football Heisman Race Begins – Week One

Betus Staff

Last season, Tim Tebow became the first sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy adding to his already decorated career. As a returning junior, Tebow has the chance to take the Heisman home a second time, which would be another unbelievable feat in itself.

The only thing standing in his way are the other candidates that will be vying for the attention of the voters as the NCAA football betting season progresses. Who is your money on in our football futures section? More importantly – who should it be on?

Sam Bradford (QB) – Oklahoma Sooners

Bradford heaved up an unearthly amount of yards and touchdowns last season as the Sooners cruised to a Big 12 Championship behind Bradford’s 3,121 passing yards. He also totaled 36 touchdowns and only 8 picks. Saturday’s game against Chattanooga showed Bradford at his typical best.

He posted a line of 17 completions on 22 passes, 183 modest yards and two touchdowns. Bradford’s numbers will catapult him in to Heisman contention as the season progresses, but he has to prove that he can survive the dreaded “sophomore slump”.

Chase Daniel (QB) – Missouri Tigers

In his final year at Missouri, Chase Daniel is gunning for glory. Daniel took the game in to his own hands against Illinois, and willed the Tigers to a win. He went 26-for-45 and totaled 323 yards with 3 touchdowns and one pick. Those numbers get noticed, and Chase is already on the map. With Jeremy Maclin behind him, Daniel is capable of exploding…unless Maclin, considered one of the best athletes in college right now, steals the show.

Knowshon Moreno (RB) – Georgia Bulldogs

He touched the ball eight times and scored three touchdowns with a yards per carry average of 7.4. Moreno is one of the clear cut favorites to win the Heisman, and performances such as these will have to keep rolling in for Knowshon to overcome the sophomore tag and win the illustrious award.

Tim Tebow (QB) – Florida Gators

The reigning Heisman winner only posted 137 yards on 9-for-14 completions, but the Gators were playing Hawaii so nobody in the NCAAF betting community expected much. The man-child will have to have another monster year to prove he is worthy of repeating. However, if his Herculean efforts don’t translate in to wins, then nothing will matter for the defending champ.

Pat White (QB) – West Virginia Mountaineers

Perhaps the most electrifying man in college football, Pat White now owns the show in West Virginia with Steve Slaton waiting for his chance in Houston. Noel Devine will steal headlines on occasion, but Pat White will hog the Heisman spotlight if he continues to have 5 touchdown performances like he did against Villanova.

Chris Wells (RB) – Ohio State

Wells posted 111 rushing yards and a touchdown on 13 attempts before going down with a foot injury. We’ll keep you posed on his health, but this injury looks to be more serious than anyone could imagine. For now, Wells is one of the top contenders, and his efforts up until his injury on Saturday prove his case.

NCAAF Saturday – Stanford Cardinal vs. Arizona State Sun Devils

The Stanford Cardinal, yes, that glorified team in the Pac-10 named after a color and with a fir tree as a mascot, started their season with aplomb against the much more ballyhooed Oregon State Beavers by beating the Beavers 36 to 28 this past Saturday.

It was a huge victory for Stanford. The Cardinal practically shut-down online sportsbooks last year when they took out the USC Trojans on the road.

Luckily, because they started out this season much better than they did last season, I suspect that there won’t be any 43 ½ point online betting spreads when the Cardinal play the Trojans this year.

Of course, that’s way, way in the future. This weekend the Cardinal will try to capitalize on their momentum when they take on what many football betting fans consider the second best team in the Pac-10, the Arizona State Sun Devils.

The Sun Devils looked okay beating Northern Arizona 30 to 13 in their first game of the season. I say okay because the high flying Sun Devils should have scored at least 42 points in this game. No worries.

It’s not like the Stanford Cardinal should pose much of a threat to the Sun Devils, right? I mean, a victory against Oregon State is one thing. Beating ASU in Tempe where the temperature should be between 95 to 100 degrees is another.

Here are the BetUS online sportsbook NCAAF odds for this game.

Kick-off: 9/6/2008 10:00 pm est.

Stanford Cardinal + 14 – 110

Arizona State Sun Devils - 14 – 110

The key in determining the winner against the spread in this game is determining which Kool-Aid to drink. If NCAAF betting fans like the look of the Kool-Aid being offered by the Stanford Cardinal, that says the Cardinal have improved to the point of challenging teams like the Sun Devils, then by all means make an online wager on the Cardinal.

But if the Sun Devil Kool-Aid looks tempting, the drink that says the Sun Devils are the second best team in the Pac-10 after USC, then you have to take the Sun Devils at – 14 in this game, right?

The truth is that the Stanford Cardinal looked good in their last game versus the Oregon State Beavers, but not good enough for me to even consider taking them in Arizona State’s first home game of the NCAAF season. The Sun Devils are far superior to the Stanford Cardinal. They should beat the Cardinal by at least 20 points. This has the makings of a serious blow-out with Arizona State’s offense just as good as last season’s and their defense being better this season than last year’s.

I’ll be making an online wager on the Arizona State Sun Devils to cover the – 14 points in their game versus the Stanford Cardinal this Saturday.

Football Prop Betting – Falcons/Yellow Jackets Head-to-Head

Two teams in the vicinity of Peachtree Street are undergoing a rebuilding job this season. The Atlanta Falcons went through hell on earth last year, betrayed by their star quarterback, a former #1 overall draft choice, and abandoned by their coach, who promised he was staying one day and found himself at a press conference at the University of Arkansas the next.

At Georgia Tech, the Yellow Jackets, who took a trip to the Humanitarian Bowl last season, brought a new coach aboard (Paul Johnson) who will emphasize running the ball with his form of the option, which he calls the “flexbone spread.”

Who is going to win more games this season?

Here are the odds according to BetUS: BetUS Football Proposition Odds

Who Will Have the Most Regular Season Wins?

ATLANTA FALCONS +1.5 wins (-135)

GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS -1.5 wins (-105)

Georgia Tech has several “borderline” games that they could either win or lose, depending on how quickly they can adapt to the system Paul Johnson is installing. First of all, Jacksonville State, even though it now has an athletic hand at the controls in Ryan Perrilloux, should constitute a win. So should Duke and Gardner-Webb. Miami and Mississippi State are very real win possibilities, and there is no reason the game with Virginia, which Georgia Tech hosts on October 25, should not be very competitive. So six wins are within Georgia Tech’s reach, it would seem.

Mike Smith, who was an assistant coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars, has joined the Falcons as head coach and he is trying to pickup the pieces that were left by the indictment, conviction and imprisonment of Michael Vick and the sudden departure of former coach Bobby Petrino, who had already lost control of his team.

It is Smith’s idea to toughen up the Falcons, and that means moving the football on the ground. He is also going to start the season with a rookie quarterback, Matt Ryan, who was the fourth pick in the draft. The thing about Ryan is that, while he is not the second coming of Dan Marino, he was a four-year player at Boston College who, considering the alternatives (Chris Redman, Joey Harrington) probably gives Atlanta its best chance to win now.

I guess the rationale toward my selection on this prop is that I think Smith is going to have a more successful time, at least early on, instilling his philosophy, because he went out and got a back who is a budding star in Michael Turner, who should be good for 1200-1400 yards. If they do as they pledge, and get Jerious Norwood, a serious speedster, involved more in the offense, that is going to take significant pressure off Ryan. Atlanta’s defense spent too much time on the field last season, which undoubtedly contributed to their #29 overall rating. That should improve, and it will bring overall improvement with it. They won four games last year and I can see them winning six this season.

Georgia Tech lost its best running back, Tashard Choice, to the NFL (he’s a Dallas Cowboy). Yes, Jonathan Dwyer (436 yards last year) is capable, but the quarterback position will need to upgrade itself, since Taylor Bennett left for Louisiana Tech when Johnson arrived. the point I’m making is, the transition is probably not going to take hold right away, though Johnson will eventually get the ship headed in the right direction.

I’m going to go with a rather mild recommendation here, but it is a recommendation nonetheless, in taking the Falcons, plus a win and a half, in this special BetUS football prop.

JAY’S PLAY: ATLANTA FALCONS +1.5 wins (-135)

Virginia Tech at East Carolina – Hokies Need Ground Forces

BetUS Sportsbook bettors will be able to watch a couple of bowl teams from last year in action as the season kicks off on Saturday, August 30 in Charlotte, with the Hokies of Virginia Tech (11-3 SU, 7-6 ATS in 2007) take on the East Carolina Pirates (8-5 SU & ATS) at Bank of American Stadium (natural turf) at Noon ET.

BetUS NCAA Football Odds: VIRGINIA TECH -10

Here are some of the NCAA college football betting trends as they relate to this matchup:

* VT has won and covered five of its last six games
* VT has covered six of its last seven road games
* VT has won 16 of its last 18 road games SU

* VT has played five of its last seven road games OVER the total
* ECU has won and covered four of its last five games
* ECU has covered nine of its last 13 home games
* ECU has won six of its last eight home games SU

This game would technically be considered a home game for East Carolina, one supposes; however, it is not being played at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville but rather at Bank of American Stadium in Charlotte, and the Pirates do not have the same regional following as the Hokies. Last year’s meeting was emotionally-charged, as it was not long after the tragic student shooting at Blacksburg. Oddsmakers thought VT was going to come out and blow away ECU, installing them as 28-point favorites, but East Carolina hung tough all the way with a spirited defensive performance, holding the Hokies to 33 net rushing yards and covering the number with room to spare in the 17-7 defeat. East Carolina went on to play in the Hawaii Bowl and beat Boise State, 41-38. Virginia Tech competed in the Orange Bowl, where it lost a 24-21 decision to Kansas.

In 2007 ECU scored more touchdowns than at any other time in its history (52), and one of the big reasons for that was the wizardry of Chris Johnson, who led the nation in all-purpose yardage. But Johnson has now departed, taken in the first round by the Tennessee Titans, and there is no one to replace him. Patrick Pinkney and Rob Kass both saw significant action at the quarterback spot last year, and they’re going to have to work with some new players at the skill positions, with the exception of WR Jamar Bryant, who caught 48 passes.

Defensively there is some uncertainty, especially in the secondary, where the Pirates were 114th nationally in defending the pass. But nine starters return, so there is reason for Skip Holtz to be somewhat excited about the possibilities.

It’s not like Virginia Tech is going to light up the sky with aerials, at least not as long as Tyrod Taylor is the man under center. We anticipate him to be the starter, although we understand that Sean Glennon, who is the better passer, will get some time in. This QB combo, played artfully, can keep a lot of defenses off-balance. Rushing the ball out of the backfield will be a problem; since Brandon Ore was dismissed from the team, no one has stepped up in practices and scrimmages to seize the job. The staff is hoping freshman Ryan Williams can do it, but he’ll have to adapt quickly if the Hokies are to improve on their #82 rushing ranking. Virginia Tech had the nation’s 4th-ranked defense last season; it will probably always have some talent as long as Frank Beamer is the head coach but loses seven starters, including great linebackers in Vince Hall and Xavier Adibi.

Virginia Tech has covered 10 of its last 11 games as a road favorite. But the lack of explosiveness in this attack would concern anyone hoping they can put some distance between themselves and an opponent. East Carolina brings enough people back to score points, and Skip Holtz is enough of a defensive mind to drag some improvement out of that defense. We will take the points with East Carolina, the 10-point underdog in the BetUS NCAA college football odds.

JAY’S PLAY: EAST CAROLINA (+10) **

NCAA Football Week One Wagering Pick – Western Illinois at Arkansas

The Arkansas Razorbacks, (8-5 SU, 7-5 ATS, 8-4 O/U) have a new leading man in former Louisville and Atlanta Falcons head coach Bobby Petrino and have some pieces in place to succeed in 2008 despite losing the best running back in all of college football in Darren McFadden.

After NAA football betting fans saw them go 8-5 overall and 4-4 in SEC play last season, Petrino will bring his pass-oriented offense back to the college game after flaming out miserably in his one quitting-interrupted season with the Falcons in which he was called every four-letter name in the book by Falcons players, management and owner Arthur Blank.

The Razorbacks will have a new starting tailback in speedy Michael Smith who could turn out to be a star someday. However, the team has issues at quarterback with incumbent starter Casey Dick not setting the college football world on its ear with his mediocre passing skills.

Having solid lines on both sides of the ball should help as the team adjusts to Petrino’s pass-happy system. Center Jonathan Luigs anchors an offensive line that allowed only one sack per game last season.

The Western Illinois Leathernecks, (6-5 SU, 3-3 Conf.) went 6-5 overall last season, including a respectable 3-3 mark in Missouri Valley Conference matchups. Led by the team’s impressive offense, the Leathernecks averaged 24.8 points per game while allowing just 19.5 points per game defensively.

Western Illinois at Arkansas Picks – Click Here >

Western Illinois ran for a whopping 255.6 yards per game but threw for just 123.5 yards per contest. The Leathernecks allowed just 144.5 yards per game on the ground and another 175.5 per game through the air.

All-America running back Herb Donaldson is back for his senior season and is on pace to become Western Illinois’ all-time leading rusher in his third season as a starter. The Walter Payton Award finalist will anchor an offense that returns 19 letterwinners and nine starters from the nation’s 11th-best rushing team.

Sophomore quarterback Matt Barr matched the school record for wins as a freshman (five) and became the most successful rushing quarterback in school history, gaining 385 yards on the ground and four touchdowns on 91 attempts.

Entering his 10th season at Western Illinois University, head football coach Don Patterson will be taking an immediate leave of absence due to a recent diagnosis of tonsillar cancer.

Western Illinois did lose both starting offensive guards from a year ago but returns 22 defensive lettermen, including nine starters and six all-conference honorees from a group that ranked among the nation’s top-25 in six categories last year.

Analysis: While I am certainly no fan of Petrino’s and generally think the guy gave the Falcons a really under-handed one-year tenure, I think this is a game the Razorbacks win easily as they likely run up the score on the Leathernecks as Petrino tries to make a statement in his very first game at Arkansas.

Petrinto should remember however, that, what goes around, usually comes around, even if it is a different team delivering the message the second time around. Take the Razorback to win and win going away, though I’ll admit that I can’t wait to see the Razorbacks get routed by some conference opponent at some point in this 2008 college football betting season.

NCAAF Free Picks: Arkansas -23 Points

Western Illinois @ Arkansas
Western Illinois +23 Points -115
Arkansas -23 Points -115

NCAAF Week One – Villanova at West Virginia

While the West Virginia Mountaineers, (11-2 SU, 5-2 Conf., 7-6 ATS, 6-7 O/U) have become perennial national title contenders under former head coach Rich Rodriguez – and still possess a very talented roster – the fact of the matter is that new Mountaineers head coach Bill Stewart will be hard-pressed to match Rodriguez’s success, at least in the early going of his tenure of leading one of the top favorites to win the Big East title in 2008.

West Virginia also has a new offensive coordinator in former Wake Forest offensive coordinator, Jeff Mullen and will undoubtedly have an entirely new look in 2008.

The Mountaineers still have Heisman Trophy candidate Patrick White at quarterback, gifted running back Noel Devine and a veteran offensive line, not to mention one of the best kickers in the nation in Pat McAfee.

The Mountaineers recorded mostly mediocre wagering statistics in 2007, going 3-3 ATS at home and 4-3 ATS on the road last season while also recording a 3-3 O/U wagering record at home and 3-4 O/U on the road.

West Virginia also returns five offensive linemen who have starting experiencing, including gifted players, Greg Isdaner and Ryan Stanchek, two of the top offensive linemen in the nation.

Defensively, the Mountaineers could have big problems in the secondary depending on how much the team grows during the course of the regular season. West Virginia will be hard-pressed to replace safeties Ryan Mundy and Eric Wicks, not to mention cornerbacks Vaughn Rivers, Larry Williams and another safety in Ridwan Malik. Stewart will turn to younger defensive backs, Quinton Andrews, Charles Pugh and Boogie Allen to replace the departed seniors.

Linebacker should be a position of strength for the Mountaineers with their two top tacklers returning in middle linebacker Reed Williams and Mortty Ivy. The defensive line could also take a big hit with the loss of crucial players Johnny Dingle and Keilen Dykes.

The Mountaineers, who averaged 456.2 total yards of offense last season, including a whopping 297.2 yards per game on the ground, averaged a whopping 39.6 points per game last season while limiting their opponents to just 301.7 total yards per game and just 18.1 points per contest, will take on a Villanova team that returns 17 starters and both kicking specialists from a team that went 7-4 last season and were none-too-pleased about being left out of the Division I-AA playoffs

Villanova went 5-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association last season but were cheated out of a postseason spot while fellow CAA member New Hampshire got in with a 4-4 league mark.

The Wildcats return their entire offensive line as well as both of their starting wide receivers although they have big question marks in the backfield after seeing starting tailback Matt Dicken depart.

Defense should be Villanova’s strength with the team’s top four tacklers – and eight of the top 10 – all returning, including leading tacklers, Osayi Osunde and Darrel Young. Defensive lineman, Tim Kukucka, along with Osunde, will each compete for respective postseason honors at their respective positions.

The Wildcats averaged 326.1 total yards of offense last season while allowing a whopping 373.7 total yards defensively. The Wildcats also averaged 26.2 points per game last season while allowing 23.7 per contest

Analysis: While the West Virginia Mountaineers will undoubtedly win this contest, something tells me the Villanova Wildcats are going to cover this high point spread easily as they are a lot better than most people may think and generally don’t tend to give games away with a ton of mistakes. Take the Wildcats to cover the spread barely.

NCAAF Free Picks: Villanova +35 Points

Villanova @ West Virginia

Villanova +35 Points -115
