NCAAF Saturday - Stanford Cardinal vs. Arizona State Sun Devils

The Stanford Cardinal, yes, that glorified team in the Pac-10 named after a color and with a fir tree as a mascot, started their season with aplomb against the much more ballyhooed Oregon State Beavers by beating the Beavers 36 to 28 this past Saturday.

It was a huge victory for Stanford. The Cardinal practically shut-down online sportsbooks last year when they took out the USC Trojans on the road.

Luckily, because they started out this season much better than they did last season, I suspect that there won’t be any 43 ½ point online betting spreads when the Cardinal play the Trojans this year.

Of course, that’s way, way in the future. This weekend the Cardinal will try to capitalize on their momentum when they take on what many football betting fans consider the second best team in the Pac-10, the Arizona State Sun Devils.

The Sun Devils looked okay beating Northern Arizona 30 to 13 in their first game of the season. I say okay because the high flying Sun Devils should have scored at least 42 points in this game. No worries.

It’s not like the Stanford Cardinal should pose much of a threat to the Sun Devils, right? I mean, a victory against Oregon State is one thing. Beating ASU in Tempe where the temperature should be between 95 to 100 degrees is another.

The key in determining the winner against the spread in this game is determining which Kool-Aid to drink. If NCAAF betting fans like the look of the Kool-Aid being offered by the Stanford Cardinal, that says the Cardinal have improved to the point of challenging teams like the Sun Devils, then by all means make an online wager on the Cardinal.

But if the Sun Devil Kool-Aid looks tempting, the drink that says the Sun Devils are the second best team in the Pac-10 after USC, then you have to take the Sun Devils at – 14 in this game, right?

The truth is that the Stanford Cardinal looked good in their last game versus the Oregon State Beavers, but not good enough for me to even consider taking them in Arizona State’s first home game of the NCAAF season. The Sun Devils are far superior to the Stanford Cardinal. They should beat the Cardinal by at least 20 points. This has the makings of a serious blow-out with Arizona State’s offense just as good as last season’s and their defense being better this season than last year’s.
