The New England Patriots start
their quest for yet another Super Bowl championship
on Thursday night when they face the Oakland Raiders
in the league’s kickoff game. The Patriots sit
at 7.5-point home favorites in this contest. The total
has been pegged by oddsmakers at 50. There was some
change in New England in the offseason. Offensive coordinator
Charlie Weis left the team to take over as head coach
at Notre Dame, and defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel
took the Browns’ head coaching job. It remains
to be seen how much head coach Bill Belichick will miss
his top two assistants. In Oakland, the biggest change
was the addition of WR Randy Moss, who immediately gives
the team one of the league’s best receiving corps.
The Pats ended up a 2-2 in the preseason, scoring 80
points and also allowing 80 points in those four games.
The Raiders were 1-3 in exhibition contests.
