Jeff Gordon is starting to make
some noise in the Nextel Cup Series. A sixth-place finish
by Gordon at the Sharpie 500 on the weekend vaulted
him into 10th place in the driver standings, and into
contention for the Chase for the Nextel Cup. And Gordon
will be racing on a track that’s been good to
him in the past this weekend, as the series heads to
California Speedway for the Sony HD 500. Gordon won
at California Speedway in 2004, 1999, and 1997, and
is the only driver to have more than one win at the
track in their career.
Greg Biffle, Elliott Sadler, Kurt
Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Rusty Wallace, Jeremy Mayfield,
and Mark Martin have also won at California Speedway
in the past. With two races to go in NASCAR’s
regular season, four drivers have clinched Chase berths:
Tony Stewart, Johnson, Biffle, and Wallace. Martin,
Mayfield, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, Ryan Newman, and
Gordon round out the current top 10 of the driver standings.
Matt Kenseth’s win at the
Sharpie 500 on the weekend vaulted him into 11th place
in the standings, 11 points back of Gordon. Jamie McMurray,
Sadler, Dale Jarrett, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick,
Joe Nemechek, Brian Vickers, and Burton are the only
other drivers not mathematically eliminated from postseason
contention. After racing at California Speedway, the
Nextel Cup Series heads to Richmond International Raceway
for the final pre-Chase event of the season, the Chevy
Rock & Roll 400.
