Super Bowl XXXIX - Let The Party Begin |
| |
| The New England Patriots
were exhausted
after winning their third Super Bowl title in four years,
but they
got a second wind Monday when they arrived at Gillette Stadium
and saw a throng of about 2,000 screaming fans. "We never
get tired of this, and never get tired of seeing the fans
and making them happy and giving them something to cheer about,"
said Troy Brown who played receiver, defensive back and returned
punts in New England's 24-21 win over the Philadelphia Eagles
on Sunday.
Many players immediately made their way to the barriers holding
back the fans to shake hands and sign autographs. Offensive
lineman Matt Light, who made a fashion statement last year
by getting off the team bus wearing a bathrobe, carried the
Lombardi Trophy without a robe this year, but quickly donned
one to keep up what he called a "tradition."

MVP - Deion
Branch managed to outshine Terrell Owens on football's biggest
stage. And that was no small feat in this Super Bowl. "We
started out shaky, scared a couple of people, but we pulled
it off," he said. "Just to go back-to-back, that's
big, that's
hard.

Accusations by former
baseball slugger Jose Canseco that he used
steroids with several top players, including home run king
Mark McGwire, are being strongly denied.
The Daily News of New York reported that Canseco, in a book
to be published later this month entitled “Juiced: Wild
Times, Rampant ’Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball
Got Big,” alleges that several of his former Oakland
and Texas team mates used performance-enhancing drugs. Are
Jose Canseco's claims just a quick way to turn a buck? Or,
is a lot of what Canseco is expected to allege in his book
the ugly truth? Either way, it's another black eye for baseball.
How this can be called a sport anyways is beyond me. It's
more like a backyard BBQ beer drinking jock scratching exhibition.

| Quarterback
also has bipolar disorder |
| |
| Jets reserve quarterback
Quincy Carter is back in rehab for an undisclosed
problem, a source within the league said yesterday. Carter is
seeking medical assistance at a treatment centre, the source,
speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Associated Press.
Jets general manager Terry Bradway said through a team spokesman
he had no comment. ESPN.com reported that Carter also was being
treated for bipolar disorder. Carter left the Jets four
days before their playoff game against Pittsburgh last month
to be with his ailing mother in Decatur, Ga. The source said
Carter had personal issues and was excused from the team.A
little while after his departure, he entered the program.
Carter previously went into rehab in 2003 and 2004.The Jets
signed Carter to a one-year deal in August after he was released
by the Dallas Cowboys. There were multiple reports that he
failed a drug test. The NFL Players Association has filed
a request for arbitration in the case. TheStar.com

| Half-Ton Plans Valentine
Walk |
|
| Patrick Deuel of Valentine,
who eight months ago weighed more than 1,000 pounds, plans
to make good on a promise he made to his wife Edith when he
left a Sioux Falls hospital on Jan. 22.
"My goal was to take a walk with my valentine
on Valentine's Day in Valentine," Deuel said Sunday.
"That's going to happen next weekend." Deuel,
42, said he weighed in Saturday at 610 pounds, down 22 pounds
since the day he left the hospital. He weighed 1,072 pounds
and suffered life-threatening heart failure when he was admitted
to the hospital June 4.
His first two weeks at home have been
difficult, he said.Deuel acknowledges that he has resumed
smoking, a habit that his physician has urged him to quit.
Deuel said he smoked 2 1/2 packs of cigarettes a day before
his hospitalization."Now I open a pack, and I smoke a
few here, a few there, and after 24 hours I still have the
same pack of cigarettes," he said. "I smoke maybe
two packs in three and a half days."

| Dr.
Fred Harris told the Sioux Falls Argus Leader that it's "ill-advised"
for Deuel to smoke."Tobacco use is the leading cause
of preventable death in the United States, and obesity is
right up there behind it. He's tacking one on top of the other.
He's above the age of 18. ... He can do what he wants to do,
but it strongly goes against my medical advice." Harris
said.
Deuel said he also has been eating slightly
more than is recommended for someone who has undergone gastric
bypass surgery. "But you don't lose 22 pounds in 13 days
eating junk food," he said.

Super Bored With Halftime Show??!! |
If Janet Jackson's Super Bowl transgression was titillating
the audience, then Paul McCartney's was boring the audience,
according to viewers who lodged email complaints with the Federal
Communications Commission in the wake of Sunday's big game.
A year after the FCC logged more than 500,000 complaints
over Jackson's exposed breast at the Super Bowl halftime show,
the governmental watchdog had received exactly two complaints
by Monday afternoon over McCartney's fully clothed set. In
both cases, viewers complained of being "bored"
by McCartney's 12-minute, four-song showcase of Beatles and
Wings classics, including "Hey, Jude," FCC spokeswoman
Rosemary Kimball said Monday.
Boring or not (and some TV writers did not disagree with that
assessment), McCartney's performance was heavily TiVo'd, registering
5 percent more viewers than last year's Jackson fiasco, according
to the replay-device company, and heavily watched.

Go-Daddy.com Busty Babe Commerical
Most of you saw the commercial during
the Super Bowl featuring the busty brunette "Nikki
Cappelli" (the "Go Daddy Girl") in the white
halter top that kept popping apart in front of a Congressional
hearing committee, promoting the website GoDaddy.com. But
have you seen the longer version that Fox and the NFL refused
to let them air later in the game? GoDaddy paid $5 million
to run it but network executives pulled the plug because
it "it became obvious to us that its content was very
much out of step with the tenor set by the other ads."
For it's part, GoDaddy.com plans to sue for damages.
Check

We need Hockey |
Sources within the league and NHL Players'
Association confirmed there had been no communication Monday
and that the two sides haven't spoken on the phone since last
Friday's talks broke off.
There was one informal e-mail exchange
between NHL executive vice-president Bill Daly and NHLPA senior
director Ted Saskin over the weekend but it did not amount
to anything.
The NHL lockout reached its 145th day
and has wiped out 797 games of the 1,230 games on the 2004-05
regular-season schedule.
