Super Bowl XXXIX - Patriots 24 - Eagles 21 |
| |
| Dynasty??
Some dynasties are pretty, some are perfect.
The New England Patriots never worry about style points. The
Patriots won their third Super Bowl in four years with a dominant
second half, wearing down the Philadelphia Eagles 24-21. It
wasn't overpowering, and at times it was downright ugly. But
it was more than enough to match the Dallas Cowboys' run of
the 1990s and certify the Patriots of Bill Belichick and Tom
Brady as the NFL's latest dynasty.
|
|
MVP - Deion Branch managed to outshine Terrell
Owens on football's biggest stage. And that was no small feat
in this Super Bowl.
The leader of New England's unheralded receiving corps, Branch
tied a Super Bowl record with 11 catches, accounting for 133
yards Sunday night in a 24-21 victory over Philadelphia that
gave the Patriots their third championship in four years.

| Randy
Moss on the trading block? |
| |
| |
It's looking more and
more like Moss has played his last season in Minnesota after
Vikings owner Red McCombs gave permission this week for the
personnel office and coach Mike Tice to trade the wide receiver,
team sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. The Vikings want
a combination of draft picks and players, preferably a defensive
starter.
The Ravens, Jets and Raiders are expected to have serious
interest. The Jets made an offer last year, sources said,
but it fell far short of serious consideration. Moss has four
seasons remaining on an eight-year, $75 million contract,
but economics likely would not preclude a trade. The Vikings
would recoup about $2 million in salary cap space for 2005
if they traded Moss.

Chad Pennington throwing
deep to Randy Moss again? It could happen.
It was reported yesterday that Vikings owner Red McCombs
has given the team's personnel office and coach Mike Tice
permission to trade Moss, the exquisitely talented but controversial
receiver. The Jets, who are believed to have inquired about
Moss in the past, are interested, according to a person with
knowledge of the situation. The Raiders and Ravens also are
possible suitors. The initial asking price is expected to
be two first-round picks. Newsday |

- Great Comeback |
| |
| Medical science might need
to do a case study on Terrell Owens. He might have made the
greatest recovery from an injury in 39 years of the Super Bowl.
Just seven weeks ago, Owens broke his leg and tore a critical
ligament in his right ankle. He needed surgery and his surgeon
wouldn't clear him to play against the Patriots. The medical
world thought he was crazy. Owens fooled them all by playing
62 of 72 offensive snaps and catching nine passes for 122 yards.
Throughout the crowd, you could hear the mutterings, "He's
back." "What that man did was incredible," Patriots
Cornerback Asante Samuel said. "To come back the way he
did from a broken ankle and play at the level he played. Well,
what can you say? Some may [have] thought Owens was selfish,
but he didn't want to miss the stage of the Super Bowl for himself
and his teammates. In my eyes he's got some kahunas. Way to
go TO.

| Drunken Cheerleader
Update |
|
|
Minahan and Carla Savini, 17, both co-captains
of the cheerleading squad, were arrested after school officials
called police for assistance minutes before the start of the
Division 2 Eastern Massachusetts playoff game between Danvers
and Walpole held at Endicott College on Nov. 30.
One of those arrested, Minahan, will
have the disorderly conduct charges dropped IF she stays out
of trouble and passes alcohol and drug tests for one year.
One interesting side note: in an attempt
to keep the charges on the record, the prosecutor entered
into evidence a report by the Beverly police (who arrested
the girls) that on the way to the police station after the
arrest Minahan said that the teens should have taken the drug
Oxycontin, since it is as easy to get as alcohol and apparently
causes less of a problem with adults.

| Before some other girls
on the squad grabbed the spotlight at Danvers High School
by allegedly performing in a homemade
sex video, two others received notoriety for being
arrested for being drunk and disorderly BEFORE a football
game last fall. "No one does anything about it,"
Minahan said. Sounds like my kind of cheerleaders......NOT.

Soldiers In Iraq Mud Wrestling? |
| AMERICAN girl soldiers have
been shamed in a mud-wrestling scandal.
Photographs taken by colleagues showed them grappling and
exposing their boobs at a party in an Iraqi PRISON.
Some of the 30 pictures reveal male soldiers cheering on
two women in bras and panties in a mud-filled paddling pool.
In others, military policewomen bared their breasts or flashed
thongs for male comrades with cameras. Sounds like a good
day at the office for the good ole American Military. What
the hell else do you expect them to do to wind down? Read,
play sony playstation? Go to the local HoHouse? Cmon!!!!

humour are no longer enough to cut it in the world of men's
magazines, prompting the leading men's monthly, FHM, to stake
its future on the world of poker. Over the next six months,
the title will attempt to turn its three million, predominantly
16- to 34-year-old readers into poker aces as well as hosting
a "wooden" online poker competition (meaning no
money will change hands).
The top 10 players will then be invited to London to battle
it out for a £10,000 cash prize, before gaining entry
to a professional poker tournament where their progress will
be filmed for a television show on Bravo.
The campaign is the brainchild of David Pullan, the new managing
director of FHM Worldwide, who is responsible for the 28 editions
of the men's title around the world.

Lefty Wins by A big Margin on
the PGA Tour
Despite shots
that sailed into the desert and in the water, Phil Mickelson
is a winner again, on a course that still feels like home.Mickelson
won the FBR Open by five strokes on Sunday, the largest
margin of victory in his 24 PGA Tour triumphs.''It's a lot
of fun for us to come back,'' he said. ''Even though we
moved away three years ago, we still consider it home.''Mickelson's
adventures off the fairway were offset by brilliant shots
that led to four birdies in a final round 3-under 68. He
never led by fewer than three strokes on Sunday, then capped
his round with a 26-foot birdie putt from the fringe on
the 18th to the wild cheers of the friendly throng.''I wasn't
really trying to make it,'' Mickelson said. ''I was trying
to just get it close, and it fell in.''

| Marino,
Young going to Canton |

Induction
ceremonies will be Aug. 7 in Canton, Ohio. Pro Football
Hall of Fame |
Dan Marino and Steve Young made it
a great day for quarterbacks when both were elected to the
Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.
Marino, the most prolific passer in NFL
history, and Young, whose accuracy and speed made him one
of football's most versatile QBs, were joined Saturday by
Bennie Friedman, an early-era quarterback, and Fritz Pollard.
Each received at least 80 percent of the votes from the panel
of sports writers and broadcasters. "It's an incredible
honor," Marino said. "It's humbling to think of
growing up wanting to be a professional football player."
