The Combine Begins - Clarett Bombs Out |
| |
|
NFL
Scouting Combine is essentially "the beginning
of the 2005 season". Well then, consider
the season underway! |
The NFL combine allows select NFL
Head Coaches & General Managers to sneak a peak
at the upcoming college talent pool.
All that baggage Maurice Clarett has
been carrying for years seemed to be riding on his shoulders
when he ran Saturday at the NFL combine. Clarett expected
to blow away everyone with his workout. Instead, he
might have blown his chance to go early in April's draft.
While fellow running backs J.J. Arrington and Ronnie
Brown were running very quickly, impressing scouts and
personnel directors, Clarett managed a 40-yard time
above 4.7 seconds; because he was not among the five
fastest, no official time was provided. This guy is
a chump. I hope he goes in round 6. Now that would be
some news.

Knock Off The Kings |

Chris Webber had a chance
to become an instant hero with the Philadelphia
76ers. He could not pull it off.
After Allen Iverson intentionally
missed a free throw with 3.4 seconds left,
Webber grabbed the rebound but missed a
short hook shot as the 76ers fell to the
Sacramento Kings, 101-99.
.
|
Chris Webber tallied 16 points and 11 rebounds
in his first game with 76ers teammate Allen
Iverson. |
Philadelphia
led by as many as 11 points in this one and held
a 92-88 advantage before Mike Bibby made a fast-break
layup with 3:32 remaining to trigger an 8-0 run
by the Kings. Sacramento's
edge was 96-94 when Philadelphia center Samuel Dalembert
missed a pair of free throws with 49 seconds left.
The rebound of the second attempt went to Philadelphia's
Aaron McKie, who passed to wide-open teammate Andre
Iguodala on the arc. Espn.com

| Accenture Match Play
Championship - Toms vs DiMarco |
|
 |
| Toms was on
fire Saturday. |
Accenture Match
Play Championship Final Preview
For the fourth straight year
the Match Play final will be comprised of two
Americans ... and for the fourth straight year
it's not the matchup everyone wanted to see. After
all, this event was built with a Tiger Woods/Phil
Mickelson Sunday match in mind. Call this matchup
Mr. Consistency versus Mr. Streaky. Toms is all
about fairways and greens, keeping the ball in
play, maintaining a solid swing throughout the
round. DiMarco, on the other hand, is often an
emotional roller-coaster, pumping his fist when
he's hot, hanging his head when he's not. Just
how quickly can DiMarco's fortunes change on the
course?
If we're handicapping the
match, we've got to make Toms a small favorite;
his 17-5 career record in this event is tough
to ignore. But DiMarco plays well when he's relaxed
and he'll never be more relaxed in a big event
like this than playing with his buddy. Don't be
surprised if DiMarco pulls off what will be a
minor upset. Either way, it should be a fun one
to watch.

The 2005 NFL Draft - Consensus First Round Picks |
|
Braylon Edwards,
WR, Michigan
Everyday right here you can preview the top picks
for this years big college football entry draft
into the the big boys league........the NFL of
course. Lets get at it. Braylon Edwards,
WR, Michigan.....Could we see him go
#4 to the Chicago Bears? Not so sure now that
the Bears have signed Muhammed from the Panthers.
But who knows right?
Ignoring the Michigan-to-Chicago
path that failed with David Terrell, the Bears
try again for a receiver and the 6'3", 206-pound
Edwards is a dynamic playmaker. He needs to improve
his consistency and concentration to avoid the
drops, but his upside as a playmaker and true
number one receiving threat makes him worthy of
this selection. Edwards caught 97 passes for 1330
yards and 15 touchdowns with the Wolverines in
2004.

Kansas
are 4 point favorites. No total yet available
on this game. After calling a 74-67
loss to Nebraska one of the 10 worst performances
of any team he ever coached, Oklahoma State's
Eddie Sutton studied the tape and changed his
mind.
"It was one of the
five worst," the man with 775 career victories
now says. But at least Tuesday night's debacle
was only one setback for the fourth-ranked Cowboys
(20-4, 10-3 Big 12), who until then had been
riding a nice winning streak.
Slumping Kansas (20-4,
10-3) has lost three in a row, the longest slide
in 11 years for the eighth-ranked Jayhawks.
Capped by a lackluster 71-63 setback on Monday
night to Oklahoma, the unexpected reversal of
fortune created such anxiety that the players
declared themselves off-limits to the media
for the rest of the week. Worst losing streak
in 11 years for Kansas? One of the five worst
efforts in Sutton's long career? And these two
teams are set to decide the regular-season Big
12 championship in a head-to-head showdown on
national TV?
Yes, probably. The Cowboys
and Jayhawks each will have two regular-season
games left following their 3 p.m. tipoff Sunday
in Allen Fieldhouse. But it's a good bet the
Big 12 champion will be the winner of what promises
to be a rugged and savvy matchup of two senior-laden
teams. It's also probably a good bet that with
all week to cure what ails them, both teams
should be right back on top of their game.
Some trends
to consider:
Oklahoma St. are 3-8-0 OU in their last 11 away
Oklahoma St. are 2-4-0 ATS in their last 6 away
games against Kansas
Oklahoma St. are 2-4-0 ATS in their last 6 away
games
Oklahoma St. are 4-2-0 OU in their last 6 games
Kansas are 7-3-0 OU in their last 10 games
Kansas are 4-2-0 ATS in their last 6 home games
against Oklahoma St.
Kansas are 2-7-0 ATS in their last 9 home games
Kansas are 2-8-0 OU in their last 10 at home

Defending his turf |
| |
 |
Patrick McCullough says he's no vigilante,
but when he was attacked by a group of
young men, he shot one of them in the
arm.
|
North Oakland resident Patrick McCullough |
|
This whole story has a little
bit of a Dirty Harry or Charles Bronson feel to
it. I'm putting it up because its very moving.
This guy has a set of kahuna's on him thats for
damn sure.
Patrick McCullough has been
complaining to Oakland police about drug dealers
for the past 10 years -- and telling the young
men who congregate in front of his house at 59th
Street and Shattuck Avenue to beat it.
For his efforts, the 49-year-old
has endured harassment, threats, vandalism and
an assault in 2003. Then, during an evening rainstorm
on Feb. 18, about 15 young men surrounded McCullough
and shouted "snitch" and other taunts
as he walked from his front door to his driveway.
Someone hit him with
a branch, and others threw punches. McCullough
told police he had seen a 17-year-old reach for
a gun, so he drew his own gun and shot his would-be
assailant in the arm. Full

OF THE DAY - Reds RHP Nelson arrested on DUI
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Kenneth ''Bubba'' Nelson
was arrested by police Thursday and charged with driving
under the influence of alcohol. A passerby spotted Nelson,
23, slumped over the wheel of his vehicle before dawn
and called police, according to the police report. Officers
said they found Nelson passed out in the driver's seat
with the engine running. His blood alcohol was measured
in two breath tests as 0.151 and 0.161 - roughly twice
Florida's legal limit of 0.08 percent.
Nelson had been due at the Reds' spring training complex
at 7:30 a.m. for photo day. When he had not arrived
by 1 p.m. for an afternoon workout, the Reds contacted
police. General manager Dan O'Brien said he would have
no comment until he met with Nelson on Friday. Nelson
was acquired along with left-hander Jung Keun Bong from
Atlanta last March 26 in exchange for right-hander Chris
Reitsma. Nelson went 1-10 with 7.09 ERA in 12 starts
for Triple-A Louisville, and 1-2 with a 4.08 ERA in
nine starts and one relief appearances with Double-A
Chattanooga.

More Great Poker Tips For Newbie Poker Players
Readers have asked us why or how we selected the sites
that comprise our list of the top poker rooms online.
Security and Privacy
When you're playing poker for real money, you want
as much reassurance that your credit info is safe, your
identity and contact info won't be sold and that game
conditions are as safe and as fair as possible (e.g.
that the software isn't vulnerable to manipulation;
players aren't colluding because a system of checks
is in place; etc.). Secure servers are a necessity.
Sites should elaborate on the encryption system that
they use. All good sites should address the above issues
to your satisfaction. Do they discuss issues like their
card-shuffling algorithm? Also, what kind of RNG (random
number generator) do they use? The best ones increase
the level of unpredictability in the cards being played.
What other safeguards do they have in place to prevent
game-rigging, collusion, hacker intrusions, etc.? You
should always read a site's privacy policy, including
the small print. INDEPTH Poker Site Security DETAILS

Action
How many players log on to the games? Can you get action
in the poker game of your choice anytime, day or night?
Do they have diverse offerings with enough players to
keep tables full? The larger the pool, the more action
you'll see in both gameplay and cash winnings. We visit
the sites at different times to see what the overall
action is like as well as the variety of players in
all games offered.
Gameplay
If your money and personal info are secure but the
ease of gameplay and visuals suck, then chances are
you're not going to return. We look at the variety of
poker games offered and keep a close eye on how well
a site creates a good poker environment. How easy is
it to play? Converse with other players (or mute them,
if you wish)? Are the graphics and sounds fun? Interesting?
Can I play even if my system doesn't support the absolutely
latest graphics, etc.? Is all the information needed
to play easy-to-access and clearly stated? Some sites
definitely have more appealing gameplay than others.

NASCAR began a new era of qualifying Saturday with new
rules and the youngest pole winner in the history of
stock car's top series. Rookie Kyle Busch, 19, claimed
his first career pole in only his eighth Nextel Cup
Series start, just beating out 21-year-old Hendrick
Motorsports teammate Brian Vickers, who grabbed the
outside spot on the front row for Sunday's Auto Club
500 at California Speedway.
Busch won the pole in style, with a lap of 188.245
mph, breaking the track record of 187.432 set in April
2002 by Ryan Newman. Vickers, who works out of the same
race shop as Busch, was also faster than the old mark
at 187.740.
