was on espn last night, and its in all the papers this
morning, Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux are spearheading
a last ditch effort to save the NHL season....again.
The NHL and players association will
meet Saturday in New York
in a last-ditch effort to salvage
the season. A union spokesman refutes Friday night's
published reports that a deal is in place, saying the
information is 'absolutely false.'

Linebacker Released From Hospital

My favorite NFL linebacker - New
England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi was released
from Massachusetts General Hospital on Friday and appeared
in good condition after suffering a mild stroke earlier
in the week. |
Bruschi experienced
headaches, blurred vision and some temporary numbness
on Wednesday and was admitted to the hospital. According
to a statement released by the Patriots, the symptoms
were the result of a mild stroke. Bruschi recovered
quickly and was walking and talking normally the next
day. After undergoing additional evaluation, doctors
released him on Friday. The 31-year-old Bruschi recently
helped lead New England to the team's third Super Bowl
title in the last four years.

The Patriots defeated Philadelphia 24-21 in Super
Bowl XXXIX on February 6 and joined the 1992-95 Dallas
Cowboys as the only teams in NFL history to accomplish
the feat. Bruschi, a nine-year veteran out of Arizona,
had 122 tackles last year, which trailed only Rodney
Harrison for the team high. He also recorded 3 1/2
sacks with three interceptions in the regular season.

Daytona International Speedway Since 1959, Daytona International
Speedway has hosted the Daytona 500, now the culmination
of a two-week festival of speed known as Speedweeks. In
early July, the track hosts the night-time running of
the Pepsi 400. In addition to Busch Series and Craftsman
Truck events, the track also hosts the sports-car Rolex
24 at Daytona, and motorcycle and karting events.
The season officially begins Sunday with the Daytona
500. The season will again conclude with the ``Chase
for the Cup'' championship shootout, a 10-driver, 10-race
playoff that will decide the season title, won last
year by Kurt Busch.

OF THE DAY - Mariners' slugger Sexson cited for DUI
First baseman Richie Sexson, one of the Seattle Mariners'
prized offseason acquisitions, was cited for drunken
driving last weekend after he was stopped by a Clark
County sheriff's deputy. Sexson, a free agent who signed
a $50 million, four-year contract in December, was stopped
Feb. 5 near his Clark County home.
A spokeswoman for Sexson, Linda Dozoretz, confirmed
late Friday that the ball player was stopped for speeding
and was later "charged with driving under the influence."
"However, Mr. Sexson was not, in fact, impaired,
based on the two Breathalyzer tests he later took,"
she said in a statement, adding, "We are confident
that the prosecutor's office will amend the charges
to conform to the facts of the case." Sure he wasn't....and
I"m the POPE.

Conference All-Star Amaré Stoudemire highlights
the field of four in the Slam Dunk contest to be held
on NBA All-Star Saturday Night February 19 in Denver.
In addition to Stoudemire, Chris Andersen, rookie J.R.
Smith of the New Orleans Hornets and rookie Josh Smith
of the Atlanta Hawks will participate.The contestants
will be competing for $60,000 in prize money, with $25,000
going to the winner. Second place is worth $15,000, third
place and fourth place will receive $10,000 each.
For the first time, the Slam Dunk participants will
be competing on behalf of charitable organizations and
will be cheered on by children from each organization.
Stoudemire is competing on behalf of I.G. Homes Boys
& Girls Club in Phoenix, Josh Smith will be representing
John H. Harland Boys & Girls Club in Atlanta and
J.R. Smith and Andersen will both be participating on
behalf of the Second Harvest Kids Café in New
Orleans. Also, through Sprite's Write-In Thirst Campaign,
four lucky winners will be matched with the dunkers
and the consumer paired with the winning dunker will
collect $25,000.
