A final-round 65 gave Toms
a 19-under 261 total and allowed him to
pull away from Chad Campbell and Rory Sabbatini
for a five-shot victory in the first full-field
event of 2006 on the PGA Tour.
Toms holed a 25-foot birdie
putt on No. 3, twice made good par saves,
then closed out his front nine with a five-wood
just short of the par-5 ninth for a four-shot
lead. The only drama was the margin of Toms'
victory, and whether he would finish his
final 2½ rounds without a bogey.
That string ran out at No. 13 when Toms
missed a five-foot par putt, ending a streak
of 41 holes at par or better, and the first
5 on his scorecard over the same stretch.
It was his 12th career victory, and it should
be enough to put him back in the top 10
of the World Golf Rankings.
